Many merchants are looking beyond traditional themes toward headless builds—separating the front end from the commerce engine to gain speed and design freedom. Two leading approaches are Adobe Commerce (Magento) and Shopify Hydrogen. Both rely on APIs, yet they differ in setup time, cost and flexibility.
Headless Magento
Magento—now Adobe Commerce—remains one of the most customisable platforms available. Developers pair a React, Vue or PWA Studio front end with Magento’s REST or GraphQL APIs and host the stack on their own infrastructure. The result is almost unlimited control, but it demands a skilled team and careful performance tuning.
Shopify Hydrogen
Hydrogen is Shopify’s React starter kit that plugs directly into the Storefront API and deploys to Shopify Oxygen, the company’s global hosting network. Pre-built components (cart, product grid, search) help teams launch quickly, and performance typically outpaces Liquid themes.
Setup and Performance
- Hydrogen: Install, customise a demo, and deploy to Oxygen—often in days rather than weeks. The managed CDN shortens load times without additional configuration.
- Magento: Provision servers, configure APIs, and build a front-end framework. Agencies estimate weeks to months, depending on scope. Speed hinges on hosting quality and optimisation work.
Customisation Depth
- Magento: Open-source code, an extensive extension marketplace and no hard caps on architecture. Ideal for multi-store catalogues or unconventional checkout flows.
- Hydrogen: Flexible within Shopify’s API boundaries, yet core checkout and payment flow stay inside Shopify’s guardrails. Suitable when you want freedom but still value platform safety nets.
Budget Considerations
- Hydrogen: No licence fee beyond the standard Shopify plan ($39–$399 per month). Development costs tend to be moderate for React-proficient teams.
- Magento: The software is free to download, but typical builds range from roughly $7,000 to $140,000, plus hosting and ongoing maintenance.
Scaling Expectations
- Magento: Can handle very large catalogues and multi-region roll-outs when paired with robust servers and a dedicated DevOps budget.
- Hydrogen: Leverages Shopify’s hosted infrastructure; flash-sale brands already process tens of thousands of checkouts per minute on the same backbone.
Choosing the Right Fit
Hydrogen suits merchants who want a rapid headless launch, prefer predictable costs and are comfortable within Shopify’s ecosystem. Magento appeals to teams that require full architectural freedom and have the technical resources to support it. Match your decision to budget, timeline and the depth of custom experience you aim to deliver.
